.. then you should check your server's local time.

I experienced this problem with a german ISP (t-online.de) who uses some non-standard POP daemon to keep his mailboxes. If your server runs in the future or too long in the past, then it simply denies to deliver its mail to the pop3link. After fixing the local system time, all went well again.
