XMail Forum > Documentation and Knowledge Base > What Anti-Virus And Anti-Spam To Use For Linux

Posted by: Weezer Nov 23 2003, 08:37 AM
Hi, I'm running Xmail Server on Debian Platform. Can anyone give me information on what what FREE anti-virus and anti-spam software/filters to use, where to get them from and how to go about with installation? I've read the very informative threads here and there are some info about it but mostly just for the windows platform. Thanks! This forum is really helpful especially to newbies.. smile.gif

To make it more easy use Clamav antivirus ( http://clamav.elektrapro.com/ ) or F-Prot ( http://www.f-prot.com ) and for spam use Spamassassin ( to install it: #perl -MCPAN -e 'install Mail::SpamAssassin' ).
Now you need filter scripts for xmail so U can use those two programs:
- AV filter from Peter Lindemann ( http://www.lindeman.org/filters.html )
or
AV filter from Igor Reno ( ftp://xmailforum.homelinux.net/linux/filters/xantivirus-2.3.5.tar.gz )

- filter for spamassassin ( ftp://xmailforum.homelinux.net/linux/filters/sa_filter-1.3.tar.gz )

You can use also filter that scans for ileagal attachments such as exe, bat, vbs, etc
( ftp://xmailforum.homelinux.net/linux/filters/attach2.tar.gz )

Sorry for my ignorance but while reading the README file of the Xantivirus filter, I encountered these steps :

3) Copy xanpack.pl, xunpack.conf and antivirus.tab to MAIL_ROOT/filters
4) Edit xunpack.conf

I cannot find the said files after unpacking the Xantivirus tar file. The only files in the tar file that might be referred to by Mr. Igor Reno are : xanti.pl, xanti.conf and xanti.tab. Is Mr. Reno referring to these files, anyone? Just making sure. Thanks!
