mad.gif TimeWarner/AOL have apparently blocked their users from recv e-mails from any dynamic IP address in the name of preventing spam. I am running xMail on my home server and have just recently starting getting e-mails I've sent to friends who use TimeWarner/AOL, returned to me with a a message indicating that it had been rejected by the reciepents IPS. WHen I contacted Time Warner - they indicated that they where blocking any e-mail from a dynamic IP UNLESS it's one of their business accounts. I am a TimeWarner user and they indicated that if I upgraded to a business account (which costs more) my e-mails would no longer by rejected. Any body have any ideas on a way around this? tia - tbullard

Yep,
Thats starting to get more common.

Try This.

SMTPGW.TAB

"domain"[TAB]"smtp-gateway"[NEWLINE]

See: http://www.xmailserver.org/Readme.html#smtpgw.tab

1st - thanks for the reply - I do appreciate it
2nd - I looked at the ref you gave and am a little confused :-(
The example lists
"domain"[TAB]"smtp-gateway"[NEWLINE]

Examples:

"foo.example.com" "@xmailserver.org"

My question is: If my domain name is www.mydomain.com then the entry would be
"mydomain.com" "??????"

What would I put in the smtp-gateway portion? Would this be the smtp server that I use if I where sending e-mail via the e-mail address I got from TimeWarner/AOL. I'm just not sure what to use for that portion of the entry - tia - tbullard

A workaround - I tried using the SMTPGW>TAB file and no matter what I entered it did not seem to matter.I did however go back and re-read the manual for the server tab and used TimeWarners smtp server as the smtp gateway - this seems to work. I can send to my own TimeWarner/AOL account (where as before it was getting returned) and it still looks as if it was coming from my XMAIL server. Anyway - thanks for all your help..... tbullard

Example of what you could have done.

"rr.com"[tab]"TimeWarners smtp server "

Glad u got it solved.

Just for my own sake - I went back - changed my server.tab back to it's original state and modified my smtpgw.tab per your instructions and that also worked :-)

thanks for all your help!!! - tbullard

I had this same issue with Time Warner Road Runner, but fixed it as specified above. This is working fine for single e-mails I send through one of my personal accounts.

I have just now started to use mailing lists and this work around doesn't seem to work for messages sent to mailing lists. Shouldn't the gateway still be used with mailing lists, or do I need to configure something else?

Clear smtpgw.tab and use smtpfwd.tab to forward all traffic to a SMTP server with a static IP.

How do I block spam sent from Dynamic IP addresses like AOL/RR? I'm using relays.ordb.org and relays.visi.com lists, but still am getting a lot of spams sent from dynamic IP addresses.

You can only use these or further listservices. There is no solution which stops dynip spam to 100%.
