XMail 1.1 on Win2K

How do I set up XMail so that POP3 passwords (and SMTP authentication passwords) are not send in clear text over the Net?
Outlook Express has a setting called "Log in using Secure Password Authentication," can that be used with XMail?
The readme.txt mentions APOP but that seems to have something to do with having XMail popping an external account.
Thanks in advance!
