503 Bad sequence of commands

Hi

I have had xmail up and running for a few days and everthing was going fine.
I have now installed umpl_xmail and can no longer send email from my email client on another machine.

I get back the error 503 Bad sequence of commands.

I have tried searching the forum and have tried many of the solutions to similar problems but with no luck.


Sorry, I didn't say what platform. I'm running on SuSe Linux 8.2.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what has caused the problem.

There must be another error message before the 'bad sequence'. The server has rejected accesss for some reason and awaits a 'quit', but your client is still sending other commands.

From your client do a
telnet client_ip 25
then cut and paste the following:

Just replace sender and recipient, but leave all <> intact.
What does the server reply ?

The error you are hunting is 'local error in processing'. That means that XMail cannot create the message file for this user: andy@ddmail.co.uk.

Please check, if MailRoot/domains/ddmail.co.uk/andy contains all files and folders enumerated in the manual.

Also make sure that you did a
chmod -R 700 /var/MailRoot

I have tried the things above and it has not fixed the problem.

I have checked the disk space, which is fine. I can collect mail from a pop3 client but not send any. Although I can receive and send if I use umpl_xmail.

Do you have any other ideas ....

-Stop XMail server
- rm /var/MailRoot/tabindex/*
- Restart server

Additionally double check all your .tab files, if they contain real TABs ...

I have tried deleting all the files in tabindex folder and restarting the server.

All my tab files contain true tabs.

I have just installed UebiMiau and when I try to send a mail I get the following error.

It was not possible to send this e-mail

SMTP Error: Recipient not accepted. Verify your relay rules

Hi

Many thanks for your help. I have fixed the problem.

Some how, maybe me unintentionally or maybe from install Umpl_xmail the top 5 lines in my server.tab all had #'s at the begining.

After removing them everything now works perfectly.

So XMail did not know its helo_domain and so did not find the recipient user .... thanks for the feedback!

Only it seems strange to me that it ran ok, and did everything else fine.

helo_domain is just needed for the SMTP protocol. It seems that only the smailer, which handles external access has this problem. The lmailer which does the local delivery doesn't seem to need it, because it just moves files in the filesystem without using any port.
