I tried to use FreeBSD binary compatibility with Linux (works very well) for xqmagent, and finally, when I was able to get all the libs in its corresponding versions, I obtained to "Core dump"... :-(

It's a very interesting utility, I would like be able to use it in FreeBSD and Solaris servers.

Please let me know the OS release version and the processor you use (I586?)

The Agent detaches itself from the console. I think this is too Linux specific. But a port would be very interesting :-)

I can develop on Free BSD 4.x and 5, and Solaris 9, both I586 platform. Could you use these binaries ?
If not, I can prepare them as pure Python bytecode, which only requires Python 2.x on the target machine.

That would be wonderful!

At this moment I'm giving two courses of servers for Internet (ADSI), using FreeBSD/Solaris/Linux/Win2K with XMail as mail server.

Each course has 15 students, so if everything comes well, I will put in circulation 30 administrators "all lands"...

Handling the same tools in any operating system!

I can set up my development environment during the next 2 weeks. The port will go to FreeBSD 5 and Solaris 9 if things work well.

If you send me your private mail, we can keep in contact. Mail to h_schneider@marketmix.com

Your part of that deal will be some time for beta testing .. :-)

Status quo:
I've set up FreeBSD 5 and was able to track the coredump, even with pure Python bytecode.
The explanation I've got from a forum is this:

QUOTE

Keep in mind that FreeBSD 5.0 is effectively a pre-release, especially as
the threads support has been re-written to use the new KSE facilities,
and is thus still relatively immature.  If your code runs on FreeBSD 4.8
Ok, I suggest that you need to take this to a FreeBSD forum.

Last I heard, the FreeBSD team don't expect 5.x to become the stable
branch until 5.2; until then the 4.x branch continues as the stable
branch.

So next step for me is to testrun it in a 4.8 environment. If things work on this release, I'll do some experiments on 5.0, eventually with a non-threading engine. The "problem" with Python is, that threads are encapsulated in the interpreter and I have only limited influence on their runtime behavior.

If you run XMail on FreeBSD 5, you should also keep in mind, that things can become unstable in certain situations. Like mentioned in the quote: It's just a tech preview.

Certainly.
Our "production" servers run in 4.6 (we will update it to 4.8).

We have the 5.0 in classroom, in combination with 4.8, if works on 4.x, our problem is solved! :-)

Current status:
The Python language port has some evil bugs on FreeBSD. Using threads provokes a stack overflow ( http://zwiki.org/PatchPython213 ). The patch mentioned in this article is a workaround for Zope, but not generally for this bug.

At the moment, this issue causes a coredump after reentering the SpoolFileAnalyzer in sequence. Since I don't want to skip the diagnose feature, this port still needs some more time until I've found a solution.

If you want to experiment with the Agent on FreeBSD, you can get the latest built here:
http://xmail.marketmix.com/downloads/xqmag...ent_freebsd.tgz

If you have any questions about installation, please add them to this topic.

Done -- XMQ Agent for FreeBSD is released!

Download at
http://xmail.marketmix.com/downloads/xqmag...ent_freebsd.tgz

The Python related bug is limited to the regular expression module used by the analyzer. It's replaced now by an older but stable module. XQM passed all tests and is assumed as stable.
Please let me know any issues with this port.
