hello everybody.

a friend of me installed on my server xmail. since then i'm pretty happy with that. fast emailsystem, easy to use and all that stuff.

i just had the problem getting so much spam (about 300 emails a day), and that made me install ASSP.

i was going trough the starting section of assp: http://www.asspsmtp.org/wiki/Getting_Started

and also reading the documentation
http://www.asspsmtp.org/wiki/Documentation

i also did the steps from this forum wich nomad wrote
http://xmailforum.homelinux.net/index.php?showforum=10

well, everything went pretty good, without troubles and the system is up and running.

note: i downloaded the last stable release (came out today image007.gif )
ASSP Version: 1.3.5(16.3)

ASSP runing here (not figured out yet what this ? after perl -- should mean)
root 11976 1 0 09:58 pts/0 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl --? ./assp.pl

Xmail is up and running as well
root 9367 1 0 09:55 ? 00:00:01 /var/lib/xmail/bin/XMail

i configured (i hope) all the necessary thing in the interface.

my mails are working, i restarted a couple of times the server
BUT
here's the problem

i'm still receiving spam mails, there's no difference to before.
if i'm going into the panel DOMAIN:55555 i can see everything, can change everything and make changes. but if i check the stats it shows me
all the time the defauls (everywhere 0)

looks crazy to me. i guess that my ASSP don't check the mails.

i went now a couple of times trough everything, asked google but i can not find
what could be the problem.

i guess i forgott sth. or misunderstand sth. but can not find the problem, what makes me go crazy.

did somebody had already that problem, sth. similiar or maybe know what could be the solution and point me on that...

thanks in advice

1st 1.3.8 is not what you should be running thats a development version. Stick with 1.3.3.8 for now.

Does ASSP logs show any info ?
Whats does XMail logs say ?
Can you post any log info ?
What Version of XMail ?
What OS ?

Really it sounds like you don't have ASSP in front of XMAIL (just guessing here, but you did say every thing had zeros under the stats info). A good test for this is to turn off / kill ASSP and see if you can still send and receive (new) emails. If so then ASSP & xmail is not configured right.

Again just to ( quick & dirty ) recap.

1. Setup ASSP to listen on all 25 ports (default on any new install/setup).
2. Setup XMail SMTP service to listen on any port other then 25.
3. Disable (for now) all SSL on xmail (command line startup options **AND** in server.tab)

It'll look something like this when done (log and function wise).

Remote Server (nomadcf.com) => YourDomain(ASSP):25 => 127.0.0.1(XMAIL):26

thanks for the quick reply.
thumbs up for that

i'm runing a debian, 2.6.9-023stab033.6-enterprise #1 SMP Tue Nov 7 16:16:56 MSK 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

ok. so i'll get back to 1.3.3.8
--> can i just download that one, remove the old directory and start from the beginning, right?

/var/lib/xmail/ASSP/logs -> maillog.txt shows me:

CODE
Mar-6-08 15:58:50 Cleaning cache records...

Mar-6-08 15:59:05 Cleaning delaying database (safelisted tuplets) finished; keys before=0, deleted=0

^^ just stuff like that, and if i'm changing anything in the configuration it comes in the log.

the Xmail logs under /var/lib/xmail/logs
- pop3-200803060000
---- shows the pop logins (e,g from today)
- ctrl-200803060000
---- all the administrator user logins
- smtp-200803060000
---- shows me the incoming messages

^^ everything in the logs looks fine

the xmail server version is 1.22

if i telnet to my ip/server on port 25 the xmail server says hello

ASSP listens to port 26, checked that again

i can kill the process, still getting emails

SSL is disabled...

if you're up in aim we could talk in aim. don't wanna post here logfiles crazy.gif

let me know what you think and if your in aim

thanks

Think I found your problem. You've got ASSP listening on port 26. Switch that to port 25 and setup xmail to listen on port 26.

ok. just to make sure we're talking about the same

./xmail start | -Sp 26

then, i changed the port on ASSP to 25

how can i check if xmail runs on 26 and ASSP on 25? telnet on 26 doesn't help

then, restartet xmail & assp, mails are going trough, but still no effect. everything seems to be the same...

any suggestions?

or did i forgot sth.?

#1 what does "sth." mean ?
#2 if after setting xmail to listen on port 26. You can NOT telnet to port 26. Then xmail is not listening on 26
#3 if you have ASSP setup to listen on port 25 then the ASSP logs will show you info about incoming messages and xmail will show you all smtp connecting are coming from 127.0.0.1 (IF ASSP is on the same box.)

Heres my Xmail Command line settings
CODE
-Mr 24 -Pl -Ph -Sl -Ql -Yi 30 -Yl -Fl -Cl -Ll -Qg -Sr 200 -Sp 20025 -Pp 20110 -Fp 20079

(You'll want to replace the 20025 with 26 and 20110 with 110 and 20079 with 79)

sth. = something wink.gif

ok. i used your command line, edited it like you told and startet everything.

if i'm now looking into the /ASSP/logs/maillog.txt
i get this error

Mar-6-08 17:59:26 Admin connection from 83.228.xxx.xxx:13136; page:/
Mar-6-08 17:59:26 Couldn't create server socket on port '25' -- maybe another service is running or I'm not root (uid=0)?
Mar-6-08 17:59:26 AdminUpdate: listening on new mail port 25 (changed from 20025)

in the smtp log of xmail i get the same inputs like before

so as i understand, xmail won't listen on 26 or my socket won't change, right?

i know, i can be anoying, so thank you for your help...

now i killed once again the process of assp.pl and startet it again.
the log says the following:

No Prob,

From the top stop BOTH ASSP and xmail (and as the user root).

1. now WITH OUT starting up anything, try to telnet to your mail server on port 25. If something answers then you've got something already using port 25. And you'll need to find out what it is and stop it.

2. Setup ***ASSP*** to listen on port 25
3. Setup ***XMAIL*** to listen on port 26 (aka xmail -Sp 26)

4. Start up XMAIL **ONLY**, can you telnet to it on port 26 ? (if so great, XMAIL no confiugred right. Try telneting to port 25. If you can (and at this point you should NOT be able too) then XMAIL is still configured wrong. See #3)

5. Start up ASSP, Can you telnet to 25 (At this point we should be able too, if not... post the ASSP logs ?)

that's it

if i set the flat -Sp 26 (to start on port 26)
xmail always starts on port 25
i can telnet on port 25

to be honest, i have no clue how i could tell xmail on another way to start on port 26 instead 25

tried everything...

do you have any idea?

is the port maybe set somewhere in a config file?

EDIT 1:

i found in the file servers.tab
the option:
CODE
[SmtpConfig-IP | SmtpConfig-IP,PORT]

Specific IP or IP,PORT SMTP server config. Examples:

    "SmtpConfig-192.168.1.123" "..."
    "SmtpConfig-192.168.1.17,1025" "..."

The variable value is a comma separated sequence of configuration tokens whose meaning is:

   MailAuth

authentication required to send mail to the server. Please note that by setting this value everything requires authentication, even for sending to local domains, and this is probably not what you want. The ``mail-auth'' is also synonym of ``MailAuth''.

if i put in there the server's ip and the port 26 and start xmail again but it didn't helped.
i put in 2 lines, the server's ip and 127.0.0.1,26

not sure if this has something to do with the configuration.

is there any other file/location where the port is set by default?

EDIT 2:
honestyl, i guess my flags i set are not used by xmail.
im in /etc/init.d/
if i do ./xmail start -Sp 26

right? otherwise i've no idea what coudl be the problem

#1 remove the servers.tab stuff you just put in.
#2 stop all copys of xmail (use "ps eafx" and look for any xmail's still running and kill them)
#3 your file "/etc/init.d/xmail" is just a script that calls the xmail binary !!! so adding the "-Sp 26" will no nothing. You need to edit the file and find the line:

XMAIL_CMD_LINE=""

and change that to

XMAIL_CMD_LINE=" -Sp 26"

then restart xmail.

good morning

so, just came in and did what you said in the last post.

i noticed in the /etc/init.d/xmail
the line: XMAIL_CMD_LINE=`cat /etc/xmail/cmd_line`
so i changed the cms_line with the option -Sp 26

i started xmail again, telnet on port 25 - nothing. so far so good. that's how it should be.

then i started ASSP, telnet on port 25 and i got a response. cool. works.

EDIT:

just got some other troubles, but i guess i could fix them.

i'll let you know later how it's going...

CODE
Mar-7-08 11:59:12 [RelayAttempt] 72.188.186.180 <Schoderl_aejeafe@juno.com> relay attempt blocked for: myemail@somedomain.com

went trough this http://xmailforum.homelinux.net/index.php?showtopic=2213
from hschneider...

doesn't help...

might i did sth. wrong in the configuration?

i guess my ASSP setting in the Section "Relaying" are then wrong...

what you think?

ok. i could also solve that problem....
i'll just make new threads so if other users with same problem can handle it...

in ASSP

i put in
Accept All Mail* -> 127.0.0.1
Local Domains* -> mydomain.com
Relay Host -> mail.mydomain.com:25 not sure yet if this is right.

at least i'm not getting anymore messages not relaying

i tried from some free emailaccounts (eg gmail.com, gmx.net) to send messages.
i get the messages, but it take about 10 minutes until i get them since i send it.

i'v got also another business emailadress, from that adress i still didn't got the email (20 minutes ago)

@nomad: are there any options/setting i've to check/input before i've a good runing system?

my stats show me at least the processed emails. but the spam statistics are still on 0 at the moment

also i do not know yet if my ASSP is configured correctly.
i do not know what happens jet with the spam mails, how they will be categorized
or even if my ASSP is set up correctly to work fine in the usual daily business...

is there a howto what are the basic settins how ASSP work properly or do you nomad
can tell me what options/flags/settings are important/good?

thanks
